Travel takes a journey to the lecture hall

Sometimes you need to flee because your furnace has suddenly stopped working and the tub in your upstairs bathroom has leaked through your kitchen ceiling. OK, so that’s just me and my run of bad luck lately, but still. There’s always the option to run, err, fly away from your troubles, right?
The bathroom debacle and furnace fiasco doesn’t really change a thing except my pocketbook, which has been getting considerably skinnier in recent weeks. While I’d been planning my upcoming trip to South Africa before my household woes began, in some ways my getaway couldn’t come at a better time. Yep, as the airplane ascends, I’ll be happily waving goodbye to a slew of problems back home.
Chances are, a day or two into backpacking around South Africa and observing some of the most stunning wildlife on earth, I will forget all about furnaces and bathtubs. In fact, I might switch life back home into the dead-bolt lock position and never want to return.
Anyway, moving away from the boring domestic stuff, Chic Savvy Travels was honoured to be invited to speak at Sunnybrook Hospital’s Restorative Luncheon series this past Monday. While Vawn and I have both done a considerable amount of nerve-rattling public speaking in the past, this was Chic Savvy Travels’ inaugural appearance.
The organizers did a fabulous job, we had a blast, learned a great deal and feel ready for our next engagement at Centennial College next month. But, until then, I have some serious traveling to do.
After all, when it comes to fight or flight, I tend to gravitate to the latter. OK, yes, I realize you can’t totally turn your back on your problems (indeed, they’ll be sitting here waiting right where I left ‘em) but you certainly can flee them for a happy blip of time.
There’s no better way to get centred, rebalanced and gain a new perspective than by taking a step back and hitting the road. Here’s hoping for renewal …
